Hello, and welcome to my website. My therapy practice focuses on teens and their families and adults. Finding a therapist you're comfortable with and that you can trust is important. Please call me if you have any questions. Thanks for visiting!

Art Therapy uses images instead of words to communicate innermost thoughts and feelings. Adults, children, adolescents and families can gain insights and self awareness using art therapy techniques. It's one of the many interventions I use with my clients. Art therapy isn't about making pretty pictures. It's about non-verbal communication. Actually, most of our communication is non-verbal. You don't have to be creative, or talented or to even like making art to engage in art therapy. I will guide you in the process, should you choose to use art therapy in one of your sessions. It's your decision.

EMDR therapy, or eye movement densensitization reprocessing, has been around for 30+ years. It was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro PhD in California. There have been many clinical trials that have shown EMDR therapy to be 85% effective for the treatment of chronic and unresolved trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other types of stressful events. The VA and the American Psychological Association have endorsed EMDR therapy as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. Traumatic memories get "stuck in the brain," like a broken record (for those of you that remember vinyl records). EMDR therapy uses an 8-stage treatment protocol. You can learn more about EMDR therapy on my website and on the EMDR Institute's website www.EMDR.com.

Relaxation, mindfulness and self-awareness are helpful tools to use outside of the therapy office. Learn guided visualization skills and other positive resource strategies to use on your own. Art making, journaling, and meditation are enjoyable ways to calm the body, mind, and spirit. I will support and guide you every step of the way until you're comfortable with using the skills on your own. Become independent and find your inner strengths.

I hold a special place in my heart for veterans. My father served in Korea and Vietnam. He was a Ranger and a Green Beret. My uncle was a Green Beret, my paternal grandfather saw combat in WWII and my brother was in the Navy. I enlisted at age 19 into the Women's Army Corps (WACs). I went to boot camp in Ft. McClellan, Alabama, to AIT in Ft. Devens, Massachusettes, then to Augsburg, Germany for my permanent duty station. I was among the first group of women to go into the Army Security Agency (ASA). I grew up in a military family. My three brothers and I, my mother, and assorted pets moved whenever my Lieutenant Colonel father was transferred to another Army post. Military family life is rewarding but it isn't easy on children and spouses. Leaving the military and entering civilian life can be difficult for a soldier. Therapy can help with this transition.
To fear is one thing. To let fear grab you by the tail and swing you around is another.

I have experience providing mental health services to Native American adolescents. Native teens have some of the same problems as their non-Native counterparts, but they also have concerns that are specific to the communities they come from. Although I am not a Native person, I have gained understanding of some of the problems facing Native adolescents while working as a clinical counselor in a school setting. Art therapy, music, and EMDR therapy are excellent modalities to use with teens.

Yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel! However, before changes can occur, you must want to make changes in your life. Some individuals are able to make changes on their own, but most of us benefit from therapy. The therapeutic process is a collaborative experience. Meaning, you and I work as a team to define your mental health goals. Therapy can be hard work but you're worth it!
